Moringa has an impressive range of medicinal uses with high nutritional value. Different parts of this plant contain a profile of important minerals, and are a good source of protein, vitamins, beta-carotene, amino acids and various phenolics. New Global Energy, Inc. has signed a memorandum of understanding to enter into a joint venture agreement with the world’s largest Moringa farm. This could produce a whopping $15 million worth of Moringa every year.

The EWOS Group is interested in several exploratory projects that Aqua Farming Tech is conducting and is interested in selling EWOS manufactured fish feed to support Aqua Farming Tech’s phased feed program.
Discussions with EWOS Group’s Technical Director Bakshish Dosangh, P. Ag, and Feed Consultant John Hewitt included the merits of adding the superfood, Moringa, to fish feed and how Moringa, grown by New Global Energy on its farms, might be used to replace soy, which is expensive and traded on the commodities market.
“Aqua Tech continues to lead through innovation by advancing the science and technology of sustainable fish farming. We are continuously seeking to develop new systems and processes that will shape our industry and improve our Company’s market edge,” said Chief Executive Officer Perry D. West.
A recent issue of Modern Farmer profiled the “gangly” Moringa plant and explains why it is just catching on in the United States despite being grown in India for centuries.
“It’s easy to grow and loves the heat,” says Fred Dixon of The Orchid, in Goleta, California, one of a handful of American farms cultivating the tree.
Dixon started last year with 800 seeds and now has more than a thousand 13-footers. While the leaves can be prepared like spinach, Dixon also dries and crushes them into a powder that’s gaining popularity among smoothie-lovers.
Thanks to a grant from the Clinton Foundation, the popular Kuli Kuli Moringa health bars and vegetable powders will be expanding into Haiti. Kuli Kuli is now sold in 300 specialty stores, including Whole Foods, and expects to be in 500 stores by the fall.
Kuli Kuli was started by a former Peace Corps volunteer and has hired 500 women in farming collectives in Ghana to grow Moringa trees and harvest the leaves. The women earn five to 10 times the annual income typical of their area so it is a win-win situation.
National Public Radio recently featured Moringa and its health benefits and told its audience that Moringa is “contending for a spot as the next hot ‘superfood,’ with an emerging focus on its potential to make life better for people in developing countries. Moringa supplements and bars are also becoming more popular here in the U.S.”
The NPR special report quoted Jed Fahey, a nutritional biochemist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who has been studying the plant for 20 years as saying that “although most parts of the plant are edible, Moringa’s power is in its leaves and seed pods, which are high in digestible protein, calcium, iron, vitamin C and antioxidants and have a nutritional profile that rivals milk and eggs.”

There’s a good reason that Moringa is known as a super food. As a matter of fact, there are multiple good reasons, according to care2.com. Among them:
- It’s high in protein but low in fat.
- It’s gluten-free.
- It’s chock full of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, folate and fiber.
- Many parts of the plant can be consumed, not just what might be considered the fruit or the vegetable.
- It grows fast and can tolerate dry heat and other harsh conditions, requiring little in the way of fertilizer or water, so it can be grown in places suffering from drought.
The popular Popsugar blog cites science-backed reasons to eat Moringa. In addition to being renowned as a nutritional powerhouse, Moringa may be used to fight cancer: it is potent in antioxidants and one study found that both the leaf and bark of the Moringa plant have anti-malignant properties that could be beneficial when developing new cancer drugs.
CNN touts the increasing popularity of “African superfoods,” which are not just staying inside the continent’s borders. According to CNN, “shrewd business minds are taking them out of Africa and putting them in supermarkets across the world. “
In the UK, for example, Zambia-born chef Malcolm Riley founded a line of African-inspired health products called The African Chef. One key ingredient in his recipes is Moringa, which Riley says “is very rich in protein — about 24 antioxidants in it. It’s fantastic for helping malnourished children across Africa.”
